How to Use the Calorimetry Calculator

To use this calorimetry calculator, input the mass of the substance in grams, the specific heat capacity of the substance in calories per gram per degree Celsius (cal/g°C), and the change in temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). Once all values are entered, click the “Calculate” button to obtain the amount of heat absorbed or released by the substance in calories.

How It Calculates the Result

The calculator uses the formula q = m * c * ΔT, where q is the heat exchanged, m is the mass, c is the specific heat, and ΔT is the temperature change. The result is presented in calories and reflects the energy required to raise or lower the temperature of the given mass by the specified temperature change.

Limitations of the Calculator

This calculator assumes constant pressure and no phase change during the temperature change. It is not valid for calculations involving phase changes such as melting or boiling. Additionally, it assumes the specific heat capacity is constant over the temperature range given, which may not be true for large temperature ranges or for substances with temperature-dependent specific heats.
