Genetics Calculator – Predict Traits & Inheritances

This tool helps you predict genetic inheritance patterns based on parent alleles.

How to use this Genetics Calculator

To use this genetics calculator, enter the traits of two parents into the fields provided. Each trait should be represented by a single character (e.g., “A” or “a”). You must fill in all four fields, two traits for each parent, in order to calculate the probabilities of the offspring’s genotypes.

Explanation of the Calculation

This calculator uses simple Mendelian genetics to determine the genotype probabilities of the offspring. Entered traits are assumed to be single-locus and follow simple recessive or dominant inheritance patterns. For each possible combination of the parent’s traits, the calculator determines the likelihood that each combination will appear in the offspring:

  • Each parent contributes one allele for each trait.
  • All possible combinations of these alleles are calculated.
  • The proportion of each genotype is calculated based on the number of times it occurs relative to the total number of combinations.

Limitations

This calculator assumes that the traits follow simple Mendelian inheritance patterns, which may not hold true for more complex genetic traits. Additionally, this calculator does not account for genetic linkage or multiple genes influencing a single trait. As such, it is best used for straightforward scenarios and should not be relied upon for complex genetic predictions.
