Viscosity Index Calculator – Measure Oil Performance

This tool calculates the viscosity index based on two given viscosities and temperatures.

How to Use the Viscosity Index Calculator

Enter the kinematic viscosity of the oil at 40°C and 100°C in centistokes (cSt). Click the “Calculate” button to find the Viscosity Index (VI).

How the Calculator Works

The Viscosity Index is calculated using the formula:

  L = (v100^0.7) - 0.7
  U = (v40^0.7) - 0.7
  VI = ((L - U) / 0.0075) + 100

Where:

  • v40 is the kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
  • v100 is the kinematic viscosity at 100°C.

Note: The result is rounded to two decimal places for better readability.

Limitations

This calculator assumes that you have accurate measurements of the viscosities at 40°C and 100°C. Any inaccuracies in these values will affect the calculated Viscosity Index. Additionally, the formula used is a simplified version and may not be valid for all types of oils, especially those with non-standard viscometry behavior.
