Impulse Calculator: Quick & Accurate Momentum Change Measurement

This impulse calculator tool will help you determine the change in momentum of an object by calculating the impulse given force and time parameters.

How to Use the Impulse Calculator

To use this calculator, simply enter the mass of an object in kilograms, the change in velocity in meters per second, and the time over which the change in velocity occurs in seconds. Click the “Calculate” button to calculate the impulse. The result will be displayed in Newton-seconds (Ns). Ensure that all inputs are positive numbers.

How It Calculates the Results

The calculator uses the formula Impulse (J) = Mass (m) * Change in Velocity (Δv) / Time (Δt), where:

  • Mass (m) is the mass of the object in kilograms (kg).
  • Change in Velocity (Δv) is the change in velocity of the object in meters per second (m/s).
  • Time (Δt) is the time over which the velocity change occurs in seconds (s).

The resulting impulse is given in Newton-seconds (Ns), which measures the change in momentum of the object.

Limitations

This calculator assumes a constant force acting on the object over the specified time. It does not account for changes in force magnitude or direction during the time interval. Additionally, it is based on the assumption that the mass of the object remains constant throughout the motion. It also does not consider relativistic effects, so it is most accurate for velocities much smaller than the speed of light.
