How to Use the Calculator
To use this log weight calculator, simply enter the length of the log in meters and the diameter of the log in centimeters into the respective fields. Once both values are filled, click on the “Calculate” button, and the estimated weight of the log will be displayed in kilograms.
How It Calculates the Results
The log weight is calculated based on the formula for the volume of a cylinder (V=πr²h), where r is the radius of the log (half of the diameter), h is the length of the log, and π is the constant Pi (~3.14159). The log’s diameter is first converted from centimeters to meters. This volume is then multiplied by the assumed average density of wood, which is around 600 kilograms per cubic meter for common softwood. This gives us the estimated weight of the log.
Calculator Limitations
Please note that this calculator assumes a uniform log shape and uniform wood density, which may not reflect natural variations in actual logs. Knots, hollows, variations in density due to moisture content, and other inconsistencies can impact the true weight. This calculator should be used for estimation purposes only and not for legal or commercial weight assessments.
