Use Cases for This Calculator
Calculate Armor Class with Base AC and Dexterity Modifier
Calculate your Armor Class by adding your base AC (from armor) to your Dexterity modifier. If your base AC is 12 and your Dexterity modifier is +2, your total Armor Class would be 14.
Calculate Armor Class with Shield Bonus
Add the shield bonus to your Armor Class when using a shield. For example, if your base AC is 13 and you are using a shield giving you +2 AC, your total Armor Class becomes 15.
Calculate Armor Class with Natural Armor
If you have natural armor that grants you an AC bonus, add that to your base AC. If your base AC is 10 and your natural armor gives you a +3 bonus, your total Armor Class would be 13.
Calculate Unarmored Defense Armor Class
For classes like Monk or Barbarian, calculate your Armor Class as 10 + Dexterity modifier + Wisdom or Constitution modifier (based on class). So if your Dexterity modifier is +3 and Wisdom modifier is +2, your total Armor Class would be 15.
Calculate Armor Class with Multiple Modifiers
If you have multiple modifiers affecting your Armor Class, add them all together for the total AC. For instance, if your base AC is 11, Dexterity modifier is +1, and you’re wearing a magical ring giving you +2 AC, your total Armor Class would be 14.
Calculate Armor Class with Spells or Magical Effects
Consider any spells or magical effects that may affect your Armor Class. If you have the “Mage Armor” spell giving you a base AC of 13 + Dexterity modifier when not wearing armor, calculate your AC accordingly.
Calculate Armor Class with Cover Bonus
When taking cover, apply the corresponding cover bonus to your Armor Class. A half cover bonus gives you +2 AC while three-quarters cover gives you +5 AC.
Calculate Armor Class with Class Features
Some classes have features that grant additional bonuses to Armor Class. Factor in these bonuses to your total Armor Class calculation. For example, a Warforged race granting a +1 bonus to AC.
Calculate Armor Class with Temporary Modifiers
If you have temporary modifiers affecting your AC (such as from a spell like “Shield of Faith” giving you a +2 bonus), add them to your base Armor Class for the duration they’re active.
Calculate Total Armor Class for Combat
Combine all relevant modifiers to determine your total Armor Class during combat situations. Having a clear understanding of how different factors contribute to your AC can help you strategize and optimize your defense in battles.
