Use this board foot calculator to quickly determine the volume of lumber in board feet for your projects.
Board Foot Calculator
Use this simple board foot calculator to determine the board footage of your lumber. Just enter the length in feet, width in inches, and thickness in inches, and the calculator will provide you with the total board feet.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter the length of your lumber piece in feet into the first input box.
- Enter the width of the lumber in inches into the second input box.
- Enter the thickness of the lumber in inches into the third input box.
- Click on the “Calculate” button to compute the board footage.
- The result will be displayed in the “Result” field in board feet.
How It Calculates
The calculator uses the formula:
Board Feet = (Length x Width x Thickness) / 144
where Length is in feet, Width and Thickness are in inches. The result is divided by 144 because one board foot is equal to a piece of wood that is 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 inch thick.
Limitations
This calculator assumes that the lumber is perfectly rectangular and that the measurements are exact. Natural imperfections, variations in size, and any cuts or alterations made to the lumber after measurement can affect the accuracy of the calculation. Always buy a little more lumber than calculated to account for these variations.
