- Click the “Calculate” button to see the resulting key displayed in the “Result” field.
How It Calculates the Results
The calculator uses a simple algorithm to determine the new key:
- It maps the selected original key to an index in a chromatic scale array: [“C”, “C#”, “D”, “D#”, “E”, “F”, “F#”, “G”, “G#”, “A”, “A#”, “B”].
- It adds the capo fret number to the index of the original key.
- It calculates the new index modulo 12 to ensure it wraps around if it exceeds 11.
- The resulting index value is then picked from the array to determine the new key.
Limitations
This calculator assumes equal temperament tuning, which is the most commonly used tuning system in Western music. It does not account for alternative tunings or other musical factors such as key signatures, scales, or modes. Additionally, the calculator does not consider the tonal quality or chord shapes of the guitar when using a capo.
