How It Works
The cousin chart calculator determines the relationship between two individuals based on their common ancestor. The depth indicates how many generations back the common ancestor is. Here’s how the relationship is calculated:
- If the common ancestor depth is 0 and both relationships are the same (e.g., 1 and 1), then they are siblings.
- If the common ancestor depth is 1 and relationships are (2 and 2), then they are first cousins, and so on.
The formula used to determine the cousin relationship is: min(relation1, relation2) – common_ancestor and the removed relationship is: |relation1 – relation2|.
Limitations
This calculator is limited to determining relationships up to a reasonable depth that can be feasibly tracked by standard genealogical charts. Errors may occur for very deep relationships where distinguishing between distant cousins becomes complex.
