Liquid Chlorine Shock Calculator: Accurate Pool Maintenance Dosage

Use our liquid chlorine shock calculator to determine the exact amount of chlorine needed to sanitize your swimming pool effectively.

How to Use the Liquid Chlorine Shock Calculator

Simply enter the volume of your pool in gallons, and the desired free chlorine level in parts per million (ppm) into the respective fields, then click the ‘Calculate’ button. The calculator will then output how many ounces of liquid chlorine you need to add to your pool in order to reach the desired free chlorine level.

How It Works

This calculator determines the amount of liquid chlorine, in ounces, needed to shock your pool. Liquid chlorine is usually about 12.5% sodium hypochlorite by weight, and we assume a 10-to-1 conversion here for the volume of chlorine (measured in ounces) to the parts per million (ppm) of desired free chlorine increase in the pool. The formula is approximately:

Ounces of Chlorine = Pool Volume (gal) * (Desired Free Chlorine / 10)

Limitations

Please note that this calculator assumes a standard liquid chlorine strength and does not account for varying strengths or other additives that might be present. For greater accuracy, check the specific percentage of sodium hypochlorite in your chlorine product. Likewise, the effectiveness of chlorine can be affected by many factors including temperature, pH, and the presence of other chemicals. This calculator is a guideline and it’s advised to test your water chemistry regularly to ensure proper sanitation.
