Mach Calculator – Accurate Speed Conversion

This tool will calculate the Mach number based on your input values.

Mach Number Calculator

This Mach Number Calculator helps you determine the Mach number based on the temperature, velocity, and altitude values you enter. The Mach number is a dimensionless quantity representing the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the current temperature in degrees Celsius (°C).
  2. Enter the velocity of the object in meters per second (m/s).
  3. Enter the altitude above sea level in meters (m).
  4. Click the “Calculate” button to get the Mach number.

How It Calculates the Results

The calculator first determines the speed of sound at the given temperature using the formula: speedOfSound0 = 331.3 + 0.606 * temperature.

Then, it adjusts the speed of sound for the given altitude. The formula used is: speedOfSound = speedOfSound0 * Math.sqrt(1 - 0.0065 * altitude / (temperature + 273.15 + 0.0065 * altitude)).

Finally, it calculates the Mach number as machNumber = velocity / speedOfSound.

Limitations

  • The calculator assumes standard atmospheric conditions and may not be accurate for highly precise scientific calculations.
  • Measurements in extreme conditions (very high altitudes or extreme temperatures) may reduce accuracy.
  • Ensure that all input values are valid numbers to get a correct result.
