Mini Split BTU Calculator: Find Your Ideal HVAC Size

Use this mini split BTU calculator to determine the appropriate air conditioner size for your room.

Mini Split BTU Calculator

How to Use the Calculator

The mini split BTU calculator helps you estimate the amount of BTU (British Thermal Unit) required to cool or heat a particular room. To use this calculator:

  • Enter the approximate length, width and height of the room in feet.
  • Specify the number of windows in the room.
  • Input the average number of people who will typically be in the room.
  • Add the total wattage of all appliances that produce heat.
  • Include BTU value for any other significant heat sources that haven’t been counted already.
  • Click on “Calculate” to see the required number of BTUs.

How the Calculator Works

This calculator estimates the necessary BTUs based on the dimensions of the room, heat contribution from windows, people, appliances, and other sources of heat. Here’s a breakdown of the calculation:

  • Room Area Calculation: Length x Width = Total Square Feet
  • Baseline BTU Calculation: Total Square Feet x 20 BTU
  • Windows Contribution: Number of Windows x 500 BTU
  • People Contribution: Number of People x 400 BTU
  • Appliances Contribution: Heat from Appliances (watts) x 3.413 BTU per watt
  • Total BTU = Baseline BTU + Windows BTU + People BTU + Appliances BTU + Other Heat Sources BTU

Limitations of the Calculator

Please note that this calculator provides an estimate based on standard conditions and assumptions. The actual BTU required may vary due to factors like insulation quality, climate, and sun exposure. For a precise assessment, consulting with an HVAC professional is recommended.
