### Calculation Method

The calculation is based on the formula for sample size determination which involves the Z-score for your desired confidence level, the population proportion (response distribution), and the margin of error.

The Z-score corresponds to the desired confidence level: 1.28 for 80%, 1.44 for 85%, 1.65 for 90%, 1.96 for 95%, and 2.58 for 99%. If your confidence level doesn’t exactly match these, 1.96 for 95% is used by default.

The formula first calculates an initial sample size (n0) assuming an infinite population, and then adjusts it for a finite population size. The final recommended sample size is rounded up to the nearest whole number.

### Limitations

This calculator assumes random sampling and may not apply to convenience samples or other non-random sampling methods. The Z-scores used are approximations and should be sufficiently accurate for most general purposes.
